Stop for a moment, look around, and ask yourself if this is the quality of life you hoped for. If you answered “No,” my question is, “Why not?” “How are you changing your life?” When asked what they’ve done to improve their lives, most people say “it’s no use because……” and so on…. excuses.
This, however, does not have to be the case. The first step toward breaking free is to stop making excuses and take responsibility for the quality of your life. You have the ability to change your life situation right now. How do I know this? I know because it has happened before. There will always be challenges, but none will be insurmountable. The only prerequisite is a desire to change. “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog,” Mark Twain once said. If you have a strong enough “want to,” you can accomplish almost anything you set your mind to.
The second step to breaking free from a rut is to take a leap of faith and, as the Nike commercial says, “Just do it.” There is no better time to change course than now. You may not succeed the first time, but you must persevere. Persistence will lead to success. “Today is the first day of the rest of your life,” as the saying goes. Don’t be concerned about making a mistake. “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new,” Albert Einstein once said.
So take a step outside. Take a chance, and as General Motors founder William Durant once said, “Forget past mistakes.” Forget about failures. Forget about everything except what you’re going to do right now, and then do it.”
